We were watching Mulholland Drive Failing to follow the plot Desperately trying not To get too psychotic or paranoid We didn’t know what Was happening, then the end arrived It was half past five And it was raining We couldn’t get the storyline Maybe it was just too deep Or maybe we fell asleep Or it was bought too cheaply to appreciate The guy’s a creep He’s up to all the usual tricks But it was half past six Still raining As time went by just like a dream No one could analyse And those who improvise should be prepared to fall And the cat that gets the cream Should also realise There’ll be a break-up, and a shake-up, and a wake-up call Watching Mulholland Drive Was certainly worth the price Given such clear advice It didn’t cause a crisis of confidence I wouldn’t think twice If opportunity came to knock But it was nine o’clock Still raining

I saw you and I thought you looked so sweet I needed you to make my dream complete Your blue eyes and the win- some dimple in your chin Your fragrant femininity Knocked me off my feet The signal you sent meant Sweet dreams of contentment Were parked in my driveway And ready to roll The blossoms were bloomin’ With love all consumin’ But we being human Were losing control Then I felt we were somehow losing touch It seemed you only loved me half as much Sunbeams turned to rain Our star was on the wane Like I came from Spain And you were speaking Double Dutch That fifty percent meant Sweet dreams of contentment Would grow ever cold And then slowly implode I dared to believe you Would let me deceive you Said I’d never leave you Then you hit the road I buzzed around you Like a humble bumble bee Thought I’d caught you Never thought you’d rumble me Your wave when you went meant Sweet dreams of contentment Were nothing but pie In a faraway sky The stories I told you So I’d get to hold you The dreams that I sold you Were nothing but lies

The blame and self-pity tango Is a dance we all know how to do The blame and self-pity tango Any woman or man can go through The moves are basic and simple But unlike some others you’re shown The blame and self-pity tango Is a dance you must do on your own The blame and self-pity tango Holds no promise of love or romance Try it and straight down the pan goes Any chance you may somehow advance From the place where you’ve been for so long now Bitter, twisted, and wrapped Up in your own one note song now And all kinds of personal crisis moments The blame and self-pity tango Has a dark and dangerous rap His brother the why me fandango Is an equally bleak style of trap The rhythm is smoothly seductive Its beat can bewitch and beguile But it’s so counterproductive To keep all those feelings on file Some blame their mothers and Others their dads Listing the things that they never had Everything comes to a juddering halt My life isn’t great It must be somebody’s fault On the stormy sea of disappointment Blown towards dangerous cliffs There are no pills and no ointment To soothe all the aching what ifs The blame and self-pity tango To sum up is futile and prone To going the one way it can go You end up dancing alone Alone Dancing alone

Wallpaper 03:21
I put a note out for the milkman Then I lock the door up tight Check on all the windows Turn out all the lights Echoes of our history cut through the midnight hour We’re all buying wallpaper now I remember all those crazy days Of bullets, bells, and beads Somehow time has changed our ways And the nature of our needs And all that peace and love stuff Just turned upside down somehow We’re all buying wallpaper now All the friends I had my times with The ones who shared my dreams Are up to their necks in mortgage cheques And company pension schemes Have we had all our freedom Or just the freedom we’re allowed We’re all buying wallpaper now Everybody’s closing in And everybody’s buying One more picture for the wall to make it right All the neighbours nosing in And all the kids are crying And Johnny Cool is staying home tonight To put a note out for the milkman To lock the door up tight Check on all the windows And turn out all the lights Will the ones who made it through all this Stand up and take a bow We’re all buying wallpaper now

You need people like me In this digital age I can do humility Or righteous rage This link will take you To my Facebook page Where everything’s for sale Everything’s for sale Laws are stretched And rules are bent To benefit the people I represent Odd times turn up In parliament Where everything’s for sale Everything’s for sale Pass the kickback Pass the buck Me, I can’t believe my luck This ascending scale is stuck On me, me, me, me, me, me, me So if you care If you believe That to give Is to receive You are tragically naïve Everything’s for sale Everything’s for sale

The Grotto 02:25
What brings you here? What stories do you tell? What battles have you fought To reach the water in my well? What brings you here? You have set yourself apart You have not truly spoken Since your newly broken heart What brings you here? You act so proud and claim I am not one of you I am not sick or lame What brings me here? I am brought by what I bear Hoping I can find release Within this piece of earthenware What brings me here? To be cured by just one sip Is this the way that we know Or just another ego trip What brings me here? To act so proud and claim I am not one of you I am not sick or lame For those done by exploitation The stateless in distress Stood here in thin line To drink the wine that’s newly pressed To choose thin absolution To be cleaned of all their sin The rough and ready Or unsteady on their pins For every nameless loser Who gave up and lost the fight Who sleep in railway stations On a cold and stony night For each and every innocent Branded with the blame is why I came For each and every innocent Branded with the blame is why I came

These Things 03:23
I hear them pray to old Jehovah Their hopes are high their faith is blind Think someday some supernova Likely strike them from behind You’re the one who feels and sees things I have these things on my mind I know you like our conversations You listen, that’s uncommon kind You can see the situations Crisis going on behind You’re the one who feels and sees things I have these things on my mind What am I to you Who am I to you You could do me you could If you’re too good to be true Yesterday I dialled a number I’d written down and underlined Just to see if I could lumber Into something silver lined You’re the one who feels and sees things I have these things on my mind

Black and white photographs Faded and frayed Kiss me quick What a picture we made Surrounded by people we no longer know Taken one summer a long time ago When we were young and beautiful The thought that you and I Could work some kind of miracle And never age and die Did not seem so fanciful When we were young and beautiful Somebody’s cousin Somebody’s niece On show alone On a stone mantelpiece Who are they? Where are they? We’ll never know Taken one summer a long time ago When we were young and beautiful The thought that you and I Could work some kind of miracle And never age and die Did not seem so fanciful When we were young and beautiful Through our fingers Like fine sand The hour and the minute hand Move on and we feel we need to know Where did it go? Where did it go? Where did it go?

Crestfallen 03:37
Crestfallen at the best ball in town He came callin’ and messed you round You can’t make him look at you The way you want him to look at you Your shoes and gown Crestfallen at the best ball in town Crestfallen at the best ball in town You’re crawlin’ home with no crown Things just stopped making sense Wounded by indifference In sensurround Crestfallen at the best ball in town How much a kiss’ll show Under the mistletoe I’m wondering if this’ll go Right or wrong How soon the bliss’ll go We’ll hear a whistle blow One more red raw goodbye song Crestfallen at the best ball in town You went all in, the chips were down You made a major play He doesn’t want you that way Don’t stay around Crestfallen at the best ball in town

Love in the modern sense Taking a careful view No going beyond the faint and the fond Nothing to misconstrue Love in the modern sense Cupid’s for days of old The need to relate can’t be left up to fate Wait and the fire grows cold Love in the modern sense Matching the perfect pair It’s an organised thing no runaway fling That ends on a ring and a prayer Chance is no fine thing The heart and the soul Keep time as the pulse rate increases It’s a life on the line thing And if I lose control Who’s going to pick up the pieces We can negotiate Use our experience Who’ll cook and who’ll clean up Please sign this pre-nup Don’t seek any recompense This is love in the modern sense

Slow Dancing 02:50
One summer night Light years ago No thought of love or romancing How could we see? How could we know? We’d be together slow dancing Lost in your eyes Found in your smile Wishing we’d always be in three-four time Here’s to the Fates Here’s to the chance The dance went on and on Holding your hand Careful and shy Dying for love and romancing How could we see? How could we know? We’d be forever slow dancing Lost in your eyes Found in your smile Wishing we’d always be in three-four time Here’s to the Fates Here’s to the chance And the dance went on and on

about

Sweet Dreams of Contentment was Pete Scott's final album. Released in 2016, it was a collaboration with the visual artists Val Close and Brian Ord. Pete, Val, and Brian created works in their own unique styles each inspired by a shared title. There is one painting and one song to go with each title and the CD booklet features photographs of the paintings paired with the lyrics of the songs. The album features a recording of “Wallpaper” which Pete played on the TV show "Jake Thackray and Songs" in 1981.

By 2016, Pete's health problems had begun to interfere with his ability to play the guitar. After a lifetime of playing solo, Pete decided to form the band "Hired Hands" to perform with him at gigs and during the recording of this album, leading to an exciting new direction in style. Hired Hands featured Jim Hornsby and Danny Holmes on guitar and Chris Ringer on double bass.
